In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the adverb มากมาย (mâak-māai), which means ‘a lot,’ ‘numerous,’ or ‘a great deal’. It is often used to modify a verb, adjective, or an entire phrase to emphasise a large amount or abundance — noun / verb / phrase + มากมาย (mâak-māai).

For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-awyàang chên)

ประเทศไทยมีสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวสวยงามมากมาย

bprà-thâed Thāi mēe sà-thǎan-thêe thâwng-thîew sǔay-ngāam mâak-māai
Literal: Country Thai has place sightsee beautiful numerous.
Thailand has many beautiful tourist attractions.

In this sentence, มากมาย (mâak-māai) describes the large number of beautiful tourist attractions in Thailand. The word มากมาย (mâak-māai) is placed after the noun phrase สถานที่ท่องเที่ยวสวยงาม (sà-thǎan-thêe thâwng-thîew sǔay-ngāam = beautiful tourist attraction) to strengthen the idea that there are many places that are beautiful and attractive for tourism.

เขามีเพื่อนมากมาย

khǎo mēe phêuan mâak-māai
Literal: He has friends numerous.
He has many friends.

khǎo dâi rīan-rúu mâak-māai jàak gāan-dēuhn-thāang
Literal: He get learn a lot from the act of travelling.
He has learned a lot from travelling.

In this sentence, มากมาย (mâak-māai) modifies the verb phrase ได้เรียนรู้ (dâi rīan-rúu = learned / has learned) and highlights that the person learned many things or gained significant understanding through travelling.
