In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the verb เข้าใจ (k^hâo-jāi), which means ‘to understand.’ It describes the ability to understand information, ideas, feelings, situations, or someone’s point of view.

It made up of two words:

• เข้า (k^hâo) = to enter / to go into
• ใจ (jāi) = heart / mind

Together, เข้าใจ (k^hâo-jāi) is literally ‘to enter heart’ or ‘to enter mind.’ The idea is that information or meaning enters your mind.

The typical structure usually follows the pattern: subject +เข้าใจ (k^hâo-jāi) + noun / person.

For example: ภาษาเขมร (p^hāa-sǎa k^hà-^hmǎen = Cambodian language); ภาษาจีน (p^hāa-sǎa jēen = Chinese language); ภาษาญี่ปุ่น (p^hāa-sǎa yêe-bpùn = Japanese language); ภาษาเกาหลี (p^hāa-sǎa gāo-^hlěe = Korean language); ภาษาฝรั่งเศส (p^hāa-sǎa fà-^hràng-sàed = French language); ภาษาอังกฤษ (p^hāa-sǎa āng-grìd = English language), etc.

ผมไม่เข้าใจบทเรียนนี้

p^hǒm mâi k^hâo-jāi bòd-rīan née
Literal: I not understand lesson this.
I don’t understand this lesson.

The noun บทเรียน (bod-rian) means ‘lesson.’ It refers to unit of study in a book or course, or something that teaches you an important idea or experience.

ฉันไม่เข้าใจคำนี้

chǎn mâi k^hâo-jāi k^hām née
Literal: I not understand word this.
I don’t understand this word.

The noun คำ (k^hām) means ‘word.’ It refers to a single word or expression in a language. It can also means a statement, remark, piece of advice, or promise, depending on the context.

ฉันรู้คำนี้ แต่ฉันยังไม่เข้าใจความหมาย

chǎn rúu k^hām née, dtàe chǎn yāng mâi k^hâo-jāi k^hwāam-^hmǎai
Literal: I still learn language Thai currently, but still speak not fluently.

The adjective เหนื่อย (^hnèuay) means ‘is tired,’ ‘is exhausted,’ or ‘is fatigued.’ It describes a person’s physical or mental state after using energy, working hard, exercising, or dealing with difficulties.

ผมเข้าใจว่าเธอต้องการเวลา

p^hǒm k^hâo-jāi wâa t^hēr dtâwng-gāan wāy-lāa
Literal: I understand that she need time.
I understand that she needs time.

The verb ต้องการ (dtâwng-gāan) means ‘to want,’ ‘to need,’ or ‘to require.’ It expresses a desire, a need, or a requirement for something. It is slightly more formal than the everyday words อยาก (^awyàak = to want to (do something)) or เอา (āo = to want (to take something).

ผมเข้าใจว่าทำไมเธอต้องทำแบบนั้น

p^hǒm mâi k^hâo-jāi wâa t^hām-māi t^hēr dtâwng t^hām bàeb nán
Literal: I not understand that why she must do style that.
I understand why she had to do that.

The word แบบ (bàeb) means ‘type,’ ‘kind,’ ‘style,’ ‘way,’ form,’ or ‘pattern.’ It is used when talking about the way something looks, is done, or is organised. When followed by a demonstrative adjective like นี้ (née = this) or นั้น (nán = that), it can be translated to ‘like’ — แบบนี้ (bàeb née = like this), แบบนั้น (bàeb nán = like that).
