Noun: ครั้ง (khráng)
Meaning: time / occasion / instance
In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the noun ครั้ง (khráng), which means ‘time,’ ‘occasion,’ or ‘instance.’ It is used to count how many times an action happens or to refer to a particular occasion or event. It is one of the most useful words in everyday Thai.
The noun ครั้ง (khráng) has two closely related meanings: A countable occasion (once, twice, three times) and a particular even or occasion (the first time, the last time, this time, next time).
When used to count how many times something happens, the noun ครั้ง (khráng) comes after a number or a quantifier — number / quantifier + ครั้ง (khráng). For example:
- หนึ่งครั้ง (hnèung khráng) = once / one time
- สองครั้ง (sǎwng khráng) = twice / two times / a couple of times
- สามครั้ง (sǎam khráng) = three times
- หลายครั้ง (hlǎai khráng) = many times
- สองสามครั้ง (sǎwng-sǎam khráng) = a few times
- อีกสักสองสามครั้ง (èek sàk sǎwng-sǎam khráng) = a few more times
- ทุกครั้ง (thúk khráng) = every time / every occasion
- นานๆครั้ง (nāan-nāan khráng) = once in a while
- อีกครั้ง (èek khráng) = again / one more time
- นานๆครั้ง (nāan-nāan khráng) = once in a while
- บางครั้ง (bāang-khráng) = sometimes
For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-awyàang chên)
ฉันเคยไปเชียงใหม่มาสองครั้งแล้ว
chǎn khēuy bpāi Chiang Mai māa sǎwng khráng láew
Literal: I have go Chiang Mai come two times already.
I have been to Chiang Mai twice.
The adverb เคย (khēuy) means ‘have ever,’ ‘used to,’ or ‘have previously.’ It tells us that an action or experience happened at least once before the present. It is one of the most useful words in everyday Thai because it allows you to talk about past experiences and things you used to do — subject + เคย (khēuy) + verb / verb phrase.
เขาโทรหาฉันสามครั้ง
khǎo thōo hǎa chǎn sǎam khráng
Literal: He phone search for me three times.
He called me three times.
The compound verb โทรหา (thōo hǎa) means ‘to call someone,’ ‘to telephone someone,’ or ‘to give someone a call’ — subject + โทรหา (thōo hǎa) + person. For example: ฉันโทรหาเขาเรื่องงาน (chǎn thōo hǎa khǎo rêuang ngāan = I called him about work.); ผมโทรหาคุณได้ไหม (phǒm thōo hǎa khūn dâi hmǎi? = Can I call you?); เขาโทรหาฉันเมื่อคืน (khǎo thōo hǎa chǎn mêua-khēun = He called me last night.), etc.
ผมเคยไปที่นั่นหลายครั้งแล้ว
phǒm khēuy bpāi thêe-nân hlǎai khráng láew
Literal: I have go place-that many times already.
I have been there many times.
The pronoun ที่นั่น (thêe-nân) means ‘there,’ ‘other there,’ or ‘at that place.’ It refers to a place that is away from both the speaker and the listener, or a place that has already been mentioned in the conversation. For example: อย่าไปที่นั่น (awyàa bpāi thêe-nân = Don’t go there.); เราจะไปที่นั่นพรุ่งนี้ (rāo jà bpāi thêe-nân phrûng-née = We’ll go there tomorrow.); ฉันเคยอยู่ที่นั่น (chǎn khēuy awyùu thêe-nân = I used to live there.), etc.
เขาพยายามหลายครั้งแต่ยังไม่สำเร็จ
khǎo phá-yāa-yāam hlǎai khráng dtàe yāng mâi sǎm-hrèd
Literal: He attempt many times but still not succeed.
He tried many times but still hasn’t succeeded.
The verb พยายาม (phá-yāa-yāam) mean ‘to try,’ ‘to make an effort,’ or ‘to attempt.’ It is used whenever someone makes an effort to do something, even if they don’t succeed — subject + พยายาม (phá-yāa-yāam) + verb. For example: ฉันพยายามเรียนภาษาไทย (chǎn phá-yāa-yāam rīan phāa-sǎa Thāi = I try to learn Thai.); เขากำลังพยายามหาเงิน (khǎo gām-lāng phá-yāa-yāam hǎa ngēuhn = He is trying to earn money.); ฉันจะพยายามทำอย่างเต็มที่ (chǎn jà phá-yāa-yāam thām awyàang-dtēm-thêe = I will do my best.), etc.
When the noun ครั้ง (khráng) is used to refer to a particular event or occasion, it is followed by an adjective — ครั้ง (khráng) + adjective. For example:
- ครั้งแรก (khráng râek) = the first time
- ครั้งสุดท้าย (khráng sùd-tháai) = the last time
- ครั้งที่แล้ว (khráng thêe-láew) = last time
- ครั้งล่าสุด (khráng lâa-sùd) = the last time
- ครั้งก่อน (khráng gàwn) = last time / previous time / the time before
- ครั้งนี้ (khráng née) = this time
- ครั้งนั้น (khráng nán) = that time / at that time
- ครั้งหน้า (khráng hnâa) = next time / the next time
- ครั้งต่อไป (khráng dtàw-bpāi) = next time / the next time / the following time
- ครั้งถัดไป (khráng thàd-bpāi) = the next time / the following time / the time after this
For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-awyàang chên)
ครั้งหน้าเราจะไปกินที่ร้านใหม่
khráng hnâa rāo jà bpāi gīn thêe ráan hmài
Literal: Occasion next we will go eat at shop new.
Next time, we’ll go eat at the new restaurant.
The word ใหม่ (hmài) can function as an adjective meaning ‘is new’ or an as an adverb meaning ‘again,’ depending on where it appears in the sentence.
ครั้งต่อไปกรุณานำเอกสารมาด้วย
khráng dtàw-bpāi gà-rú-nāa nām àek-gà-sǎan māa dûay
Literal: Occasion continue on please bring document come too.
Next time, please bring the documents.
The verb phrase นำ…มา (nām…māa) means ‘to bring something here’ or ‘to bring along.’ It describes moving something towards the speaker or the destination — subject + นำ (nām) + object + มา (māa).
ครั้งหน้าฉันจะมาให้เร็วกว่านี้
khráng hnâa chǎn jà māa hâi rāew gwàa née
Literal: Occasion next I will come for fast more than this.
Next time I will come earlier.
In this sentence, the word ให้ (hâi) is used to connect an action with the result the speaker intends to achieve, similar to saying ‘do something so that the result is…’ or ‘make sure the action is…’ — subject + verb + ให้ (hâi) + adjective / adverb. For example: ฉันจะทำให้ดีขึ้น (chǎn jà thām hâi dēe-khêun = I’ll do it better.); เขาจะพูดให้ช้าลง (khǎo jà phûud hâi cháa-lōng = He will speak more slowly.); กรุณาเขียนให้ชัด (gà-rú-nāa khǐan hâi chád = Please write clearly.
ครั้งนี้ข้อสอบยากกว่าครั้งที่แล้ว
khráng née khâw-sàwb yâak gwàa khráng thêe-láew
Literal: Occasion this exam difficult more than occasion last.
This time the exam is more difficult than the last time.
The comparative marker กว่า (gwàa) mean ‘more than’ or ‘-er than.’ When it is placed after an adjective, it creates a comparative expression, similar to adding ‘-er’ to an adjective in English — adjective + กว่า (gwàa). For example: ใหญ่กว่า (hyài gwàa = bigger than); เล็กกว่า (lék gwàa = smaller than); หนักกว่า (hnàk gwàa = heavier than / more difficult than); สูงกว่า (sǔung gwàa = taller than / higher than); ร้อนกว่า (ráwn gwàa = hotter than); ง่ายกว่า (ngâai gwàa = is easier than), etc.
