Verb: เชื่อใจ (chêua-jāi)
Meaning: to trust / to have confidence in (someone)
In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the verb เชื่อใจ (chêua-jāi), which means ‘to trust’ or ‘to have confidence in’ someone. It describes having confidence that someone is honest, reliable, sincere, or will not deliberately let you down. Unlike เชื่อ (chêua), which can simply mean accepting something as true, เชื่อใจ (chêua-jāi) is about trust in a person.
It made up of two words:
- เชื่อ (chêua) = to believe
- ใจ (jāi) = heart / mind
Together, เชื่อใจ (chêua-jāi), literally meaning ‘to believe heart’ or ‘to believe mind’. The expression means ‘to trust someone’ and conveys the idea of having confidence in their honesty, intentions, or reliability.
The typical structure usually follows the pattern: subject + เชื่อใจ (chêua-jāi) + person.
For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-awyàang chên)
ฉันเชื่อเขา แต่ฉันไม่เชื่อใจเขา
chǎn chêua khǎo, dtàe chǎn mâi chêua-jāi khǎo
Literal: I believe him, but I not trust him.
I believe him, but I don’t’ trust him.
The verb เชื่อ (chêua) means ‘to believe.’ It is used when you accept something as true or believe what someone says — subject + เชื่อ (chêua). For example: เขาไม่เชื่อฉัน (khǎo mâi chêua chǎn = He doesn’t believe me.); คุณเชื่อฉันไหม (khūn chêua chǎn hmǎi? = Do you believe me?); พวกเราเชื่อว่าเขาจะกลับมา (phûak-rāo chêua wâa khǎo jà glàb māa = We believe he will come back.), etc.
เราเชื่อใจกันและกัน
rāo chêua-jāi gān-láe-gān
Literal: We trust each other-and-each other.
We trust each other.
The reciprocal pronoun กันและกัน (gān-láe-gān) means ‘each other’ or ‘one another.’ It is used to show that an action or feeling is mutual between two or more people — subject + verb + กันและกัน (gān-láe-gān). For example: พวกเราช่วยกันและกัน (phûak-rāo chûay gān-láe-gān = We help each other.); พวกเราเข้าใจกันและกัน (phûak-rāo khâo-jāi gān-láe-gān = We understand each other.); พวกเราดูแลกันและกัน (phûak-rāo dūu-lāe gān-láe-gān = We take care of each other.), etc.
คุณเชื่อใจเขาได้
khūn chêua-jāi khǎo dâi
Literal: You trust him can.
You can trust him.
The modal verb ได้ (dâi) means ‘can’ or ‘to be able to. It indicates that someone has the ability, opportunity, or possibility to do something — subject + verb phrase + ได้ (dâi). For example: ฉันพูดภาษาไทยได้ (chǎn phûud phāa-sǎa Thāi dâi = I can speak Thai.); ฉันกินอาหารเผ็ดได้ (chǎn gīn āa-hǎan phèd dâi = I can eat spicy food.); เธอขับรถได้พรุ่งนี้ (thēr khàb-ród dâi phrûng-née = She can drive tomorrow.), etc.

The grammatical structure เป็นคนที่ (bpēn khōn thêe) means ‘to be someone who…’ or ‘to be a person who…’ It is used to describe a person’s character, habits, qualities, or typical behaviour — subject + เป็นคนที่ (bpēn khōn thêe) + verb / adjective clause. For example: ฉันเป็นคนที่ชอบทำอาหาร (chǎn bpēn khōn thêe châwb thām āa-hǎan = I am someone who likes cooking.); เขาเป็นคนที่ทำงานหนัก (khǎo bpēn khōn thêe thām-ngāan hnàk = He is someone who works hard.); พ่อเป็นคนที่ใจดีมาก (phâw bpēn khōn thêe jāi-dēe mâak = Dad is a very kind person.), etc.
