Daily Thai Confidence — Using เชื่อถือ (chêua-thěu)

Verb: เชื่อถือ (chêua-thěu)
Meaning: to trust / to regard as reliable

In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the verb เชื่อถือ (chêua-thěu), which means ‘to trust,’ ‘to have confidence,’ ‘to consider someone or something reliable or credible.’ It is used when you believe that a person, source, piece of information, organisation, product, or claim is reliable and worthy of trust.

It made up of two words:

  • เชื่อ (chêua) = to believe
  • ถือ (thěu) = to hold / to regard / to consider

Together, เชื่อถือ (chêua-thěu), focuses on whether the person or source is reliable or worthy of trust.

The typical structure usually follows the pattern: subject + เชื่อถือ (chêua-thěu).

For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-awyàang chên)

แหล่งข้อมูลนี้เชื่อถือได้

hlàeng khâw-mūun née chêua-thěu dâi
Literal: Source information this reliable can.
This source of information is reliable.

The noun แหล่ง (hlàeng) means ‘source,’ ‘place,’ or ‘location.’ Its exact meaning depends on the context. At its core, it refers to a place where something comes from, is found, or is available. For example: แหล่งข้อมูล (hlàeng khâw-mūun = source of information / information source); แหล่งข่าว (hlàeng khàow = news source); แหล่งที่มา (hlàeng thêe māa = source / origin / where something comes from), etc.

ผมไม่เชื่อถือข้อมูลนี้

phǒm mâi chêua-thěu khâw-mūun née
Literal: I not trust information this.
I don’t trust this information.

The noun ข้อมูล (khâw-mūun) means ‘information’ or ‘data.’ It refers to facts, details, or piece of information that are collected, recorded, stored, or used to understand something. It can be combined with other words to form different meanings — ข้อมูล (khâw-mūun) + adjective phrase. For example: ข้อมูลส่วนตัว (khâw-mūun sùan-dtūa = personal information); ข้อมูลสำคัญ (khâw-mūun sǎm-khān = important information); ข้อมูลเพิ่มเติม (khâw-mūun phêuhm-dtēuhm = additional information / further information); ข้อมูลที่ถูกต้อง (khâw-mūun thêe thùuk-dtâwng = correct information / accurate information); ข้อมูลที่น่าเชื่อถือ (khâw-mūun thêe nâa-chêua-thěu = reliable information / information that is trustworthy); etc.

ฉันเชื่อเขา แต่ฉันไม่เชื่อถือเขา

chǎn chêua khǎo, dtàe chǎn mâi chêua-thěu khǎo
Literal: I believe him, but I not trust him.
I believe him, but I don’t trust him.

The conjunction แต่ (dtàe) means ‘but,’ ‘however,’ or ‘only.’ It is a very common Thai word with several related uses. Its most common meaning is ‘but’ or ‘however,’ when it connects two contrasting ideas — clause 1 + แต่ (dtàe) + clause 2. For example: ฉันชอบกาแฟ แต่ฉันไม่ชอบชา (chǎn châwb gāa-fāe, dtàe chǎn mâi châwb chāa = I like coffee, but I don’t like tea.); อาหารอร่อย แต่ราคาแพง (āa-hǎan à-hròi, dtàe rāa-khāa phāeng = The food is delicious, but it is expensive.); ฉันอยากไป แต่ฉันไม่มีเวลา (chǎn awyàak bpāi, dtàe chǎn mâi mēe wāy-lāa = I want to go, but I don’t have time.), etc.

เขาเป็นคนที่เชื่อถือได้

khǎo bpēn khōn thêe chêua-thěu dâi
Literal: He to be person that trust can.
He is someone who can be trusted.

The grammatical structure เป็นคนที่ (bpēn khōn thêe) means ‘to be someone who…’ or ‘to be a person who…’ It is used to describe a person’s character, habits, qualities, or typical behaviour — subject + เป็นคนที่ (bpēn khōn thêe) + verb / adjective clause. For example: ฉันเป็นคนที่ชอบทำอาหาร (chǎn bpēn khōn thêe châwb thām āa-hǎan = I am someone who likes cooking.); เขาเป็นคนที่ทำงานหนัก (khǎo bpēn khōn thêe thām-ngāan hnàk = He is someone who works hard.); พ่อเป็นคนที่ใจดีมาก (phâw bpēn khōn thêe jāi-dēe mâak = Dad is a very kind person.), etc.
