In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the noun ความทรงจำ (khwāam-sōng-jām), which means ‘memory,’ ‘memories,’ or ‘recollection.’ It refers to things that a person remembers from the past, including experiences, events, people, places, and feelings.

It is made up of two words:

  • ความ (khwāam) = a prefix used to turn verbs and adjectives into abstract nouns
  • ทรงจำ (sōng-jām) = to remember

Together, ความทรงจำ (khwāam-sōng-jām) means “memory’ or ‘recollection.’

For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-awyàang chên)

ฉันยังมีความทรงจำดีๆเกี่ยวกับเขา

chǎn yāng mēe khwāam-sōng-jām gìew-gàb khǎo
Literal: I still  have memory good-good about him.
I still have good memories of him.

The preposition เกี่ยวกับ (gìew-gàb) means ‘about,’ ‘regarding,’ or ‘concerning.’ It is used to show the topic or subject that something relates to. It connects information, speech, writing, or actions to a topic.

เธอชอบนึกถึงความทรงจำในวัยเด็ก

thēr châwb néuk-thěung khwāam-sōng-jām nāi wāi-dèk
Literal: She like think-arrive memory in age-child.
She likes to reminisce about her childhood memories.

The verb นึกถึง (néuk-thěung) means ‘to think of,’ ‘to recall,’ or ‘to be reminded of.’ It is used when something makes you remember a person, place, event, feeling, or idea from the past.

ฉันถ่ายรูปไว้เพื่อเก็บเป็นความทรงจำ

chǎn thàai-rûub wái phêua gèb bpēn khwāam-sōng-jām
Literal: I take-picture keep in order to collect to be memory.
I took the photos to keep as memories.

The verb ถ่ายรูป (thàai-rûub) means ‘to take a photo’ or ‘to take pictures.’ It is used in everyday life whenever someone uses a camera or a phone to capture an image.

เธอเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของความทรงจำที่มีค่าของฉัน

thēr bpēn sùan hnèung khǎwng khwāam-sōng-jām thêe mēe khâa khǎwng-chǎn
Literal: She to be part one belonging to memory that have value belonging to-me.
She is a part of my precious memories.

The verb phrase เป็นส่วนหนึ่ง (bpēn sùan hnèung) means ‘to be part of,’ ‘to be a part of,’ or ‘to be one component of something larger.’ It is commonly used to show that someone or something belongs within a bigger group, system, experience, or whole.
