Meaning: to obey / to listen to (someone)

In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the verb เชื่อฟัง (chêua-fāng), which means ‘to obey,’ ‘to listen to’ and follow someone’s advice, instruction, or orders. It is commonly used when talking about children obeying parents, students obeying teachers, or people following rules and instructions.

It made up of two words:

• เชื่อ (chêua) = to believe
• ฟัง (fāng) = to listen

Together, เชื่อฟัง (chêua-fāng), literally meaning ‘to trust and to listen’. It suggests that someone listens to what another person says and then follows their advice, instructions, or wishes.

The typical structure usually follows the pattern: subject + เชื่อฟัง (chêua-fāng) + person.

For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-^awyàang chên)

เขามักจะเชื่อฟังแม่ของเขา

k^hǎo mák-jà chêua-fāng mâe k^hǎwng-k^hǎo
Literal: He usually believe and follow mother belonging to-him.
He usually obeys his mother.

The adverb of frequency มักจะ (mák-jà) means ‘usually’ or ‘often tend to’. It is an adverbial expression used to describe something that usually happens or tends to happen, especially as a regular or repeated behaviour. It is particularly useful when talking about habits, routines, and typical behaviour — subject + มักจะ (mák-jà) + verb. For example: ฉันมักจะทำอาหารที่บ้าน (chǎn mák-jà t^hām-āa-hǎan t^hêe bâan = I usually cook at home.); เขามักจะมาสาย (k^hǎo mák-jà māa sǎai = He is usually late.); เธอมักจะไปตลาดวันเสาร์ (t^hēr mák-jà bpāi dtà-^hlàad wān-sǎo = She usually goes to the market on Saturday.), etc.

เขาเชื่อฟังคำแนะนำของครู

k^hǎo chêua-fāng k^hām-náe-nām k^hǎwng k^hrūu
Literal: He listen and follow word-suggest belonging to teacher.
He follows the teacher’s advice.

The noun คำแนะนำ (k^hām-náe-nām) means ‘advice,’ ‘recommendation,’ or ‘guidance.’ It refers to something someone says or suggests to help another person decide what to do or how to deal with a situation.

พนักงานต้องเชื่อฟังคำสั่งของหัวหน้า

p^há-nák-ngāan dtâwng chêua-fāng k^hām-sàng k^hǎwng hǔa-^hnâa
Literal: Employee must listen and follow word-order belonging to leader.
Employees must follow the manager’s instructions.

The noun คำสั่ง (k^hām-sàng) means ‘order,’ ‘command,’ or ‘instruction.’ It refers to something that someone tells another person to do, especially when the speaker has some authority or responsibility.

เธอเป็นคนที่ไม่ค่อยเชื่อฟังพ่อแม่

t^hēr bpēn k^hōn t^hêe mâi k^hôi chêua-fāng p^hâw-mâe
Literal: She to be person that not really listen and follow father-mother.  
She is someone who doesn’t really listen to her parents.

The grammatical structure เป็นคนที่ (bpēn k^hōn t^hêe) means ‘to be someone who…’ or ‘to be a person who…’ It is used to describe a person’s character, habits, qualities, or typical behaviour — subject + เป็นคนที่ (bpēn k^hōn t^hêe) + verb / adjective clause. For example: ฉันเป็นคนที่ชอบทำอาหาร (chǎn bpēn k^hōn t^hêe châwb t^hām āa-hǎan = I am someone who likes cooking.); เขาเป็นคนที่ทำงานหนัก (k^hǎo bpēn k^hōn t^hêe t^hām-ngāan ^hnàk = He is someone who works hard.); พ่อเป็นคนที่ใจดีมาก (p^hâw bpēn k^hōn t^hêe jāi-dēe mâak = Dad is a very kind person.), etc.
