In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the verb เล่น (lên), which means ‘to play’. It can refer to playing games, sports, music, or simply having fun. It can be followed by a noun (a word that names the activity, sport, game, or instrument) or a complement (a phrase that describes the activity or situation, depending on what you want to express).

The typical structure usually follows the pattern: subject + เล่น (lên) + noun / complement.

For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-awyàang chên)

เขาเล่นฟุตบอลทุกเย็นวันอังคาร

khǎo lên fùd-bāwn thúk yēn wān āng-khāan
Literal: He play football every evening day of mars.
He plays football every Tuesday evening.

In this sentence, the verb เล่น (lên) is followed by a noun ฟุตบอล (fùd-bāwn = football), and then the adverbial phrase ทุกเย็นวันอังคาร (thúk yēn wān āng-khāan = every Tuesday evening) indicating when the action happens.

เขาชอบเล่นกีฬา
