Verb: เฝ้า (fâo)
Meaning: to stay with / to watch over / to keep close supervision of someone or something

In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the verb เฝ้า (fâo), which can be translated as ‘to stay with,’ ‘to watch over,’ or ‘to keep close supervision of someone or something’. The key idea of เฝ้า (fâo) is remaining nearby with a sense of care, duty, or responsibility, rather than simply watching with the eyes. It often implies being presence for a period of time, especially when someone or something needs attention, protection, or support.

The verb เฝ้า (fâo) is commonly used when taking care of a sick person, guarding a place, watching over children, or staying with someone who should not be left alone. Compare to ดู (dūu = to look / to watch), เฝ้า (fâo) emphasises presence and responsibility, not just observation.

The typical structure usually follows the pattern: subject + เฝ้า (fâo) + noun /  pronoun. The verb เฝ้า (fâo) can also be combined with other verb to form different meanings, such as:

• เฝ้าดู (fâo dūu) = to watch attentively / to monitor carefully / to keep an eye on (literally: ‘stay to watch’) (It emphasises the action of actively and continuously watching something with care or focus.)
• เฝ้าดูแล (fâo dūu-lāe) = to take care of / to look after / to tend to (literally: ‘to stay to look and take care’) (It emphasises the action of continuous, attentive care, usually for a person. Animal, or something valuable.
• เฝ้าสังเกต (fâo sǎng-gàed) = to observe attentively / to monitor closely (literally: ‘stay to take notice’) (It emphasises the action of careful, continuous observation, often for a process, behaviour, or situation.
• เฝ้ารอ (fâo rāw) = to wait attentively / to wait eagerly / to wait continuously (literally: ‘stay to wait’) (It emphasises the action of actively waiting with attention, focus, or anticipation.)

For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-^awyàang chên)

t^hēr ^awyùu fâo mâe t^hêe rōng-p^há-yāa-bāan mêua k^hēun-née
Literal: She stay to watch over mother at hospital last night.
She stayed with her mother at the hospital last night.

The verb อยู่ (^awyùu) can function as a linking verb ‘to be’ to indicate location. It can also function as a verb meaning ‘to stay’ or ‘to remain’ at a place.

dtām-^hrùad fâo sà-t^hǎan-t^hêe-gèud-hàed
Literal: Police stay to watch over place-happen-incident.
The police are guarding the crime scene.

The noun สถานที่เกิดเหตุ (sà-t^hǎan-t^hêe-gèud-hàed) means ‘the location of the incident,’ ‘the crime scene,’ or ‘the accident scene’ depending on the context.

t^hēr jà fâo bâan hâi p^hǒm nāi rá-^hwàang t^hêe p^hǒm bpāi t^hām-ngāan dtàang jāng-^hwàd
Literal: She will watch over for me in between when I go do-work different province.
She will house-sit for me while I’m working out of town.

The adverbial phrase of place ต่างจังหวัด (dtàang jāng-^hwàd) is a common Thai expression that literally means “different province” but is usually understood as ‘outside the city’ or ‘out of town’ — basically, anywhere outside where you’re currently live.

t^hêe rōng-rāem mēe yāam fâo bprà-dtūu t^háng wān t^háng k^hēun
Literal: At hotel have security guard stay to watch over door all day all night.
At the hotel, there are guards watching the door all day and all night.

The noun ยาม (yāam) means ‘guard,’ ‘watchman,’ or ‘warden. It refers to a person who watches over a place to protect it, usually at night or during shifts. It’s often used in informal everyday conversation.

1. The guard watches the main entrance all night.
2. He carefully watched the team’s work performance.
3. The nurse monitors the patient’s condition.
4. She kept waiting for a reply from her boyfriend.
5. He carefully tends to his garden.
