In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the verb ถามถึง (thǎam thěung), which means ‘to ask about,’ ‘to ask after,’ or ‘to inquire about.’ It is used when someone asks for information about a person, situation, or topic, often showing interest or concern.

This verb phrase is made up of two words:

  • ถาม (thǎam) = to ask
  • ถึง (thěung) = about / concerning / arriving

Together, ถามถึง (thǎam thěung) means ‘to ask questions about something or someone.’

The typical structure usually follows the pattern: subject + ถามถึง (thǎam thěung) + person / topic.

ครูถามถึงการบ้านเมื่อวานนี้

khrūu thǎam thěung gāan-bâan mêua-wāan-née
Literal: Teacher ask about homework yesterday.
The teacher asked about the homework yesterday.

The adverb of time เมื่อวานนี้ (mêua-wāan-née) means ‘yesterday.’ It can appear at the beginning or end of a sentence.

เขาถามถึงคุณเมื่อเช้านี้

khǎo thǎam thěung khūn mêua cháo née
Literal: He ask about you earlier morning this.
He asked about you earlier this morning.

The adverb of time เมื่อเช้านี้ (mêua cháo née) is a time expression that means ‘earlier this morning’. It refers specifically to the morning of the current day, and is used when talking about something that already happened earlier today.

เขาถามถึงความคืบหน้าของโครงการ

khǎo thǎam thěung khwāam-khêub-hnâa khǎwng khrōng-gāan
Literal: He ask about progress of project.
He asked about the progress of the project.

The noun โครงการ (khrōng-gāan) means ‘project,’ ‘plan,’ or ‘initiative.’ It refers to a planned set of activities or work with a specific goal, often organised over a period of time.

หัวหน้าถามถึงผลการทำงาน

hǔa-hnâa thǎam thěung phǒn gāan-thām-ngāan
Literal: Here quiet too much at middle-night.
The supervisor asked about the work results.

The noun ผล (phǒn) means ‘result’ or ‘outcome.’ — ผล (phǒn) + noun. For example: ผลการเรียน (phǒn gāan-rīan = academic results); ผลการทำงาน (phǒn gāan-thām-ngāan = work result); ผลกระทบ (phǒn-grà-thób = consequence / effect / impact), etc.
