In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the phrase สุขสันต์ (sùk-sǎn), which expresses a wish for happiness, joy, or celebration. It is most commonly used in greetings for holidays or special occasions.

The typical structure usually follows the pattern: สุขสันต์ (sùk-sǎn) + occasion / celebration.

To wish someone ‘happiness’ or to describe the feeling of being happy, the phrase มีความสุข (mēe khwāam-sùk) is used. This is a very common Thai verb phrase meaning ‘to be happy’ or ‘to feel happy’. It describes a person’s emotional state. Unlike สุขสันต์ (sùk-sǎn), which is used for greetings, มีความสุข (mēe khwāam-sùk) is used in normal everyday sentences to talk about real feelings.

For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-awyàang chên)

ฉันมีความสุข

chǎn mēe khwāam-sùk
Literal: I have happiness.
I am happy.

เขามีความสุขมากเพราะเขาได้งานใหม่

khǎo mēe khwāam-sùk mâak phrót khǎo dâi ngāan hmài
Literal: He has happiness very because he get job new.
He is very happy because he got a new job.
