Verb: หารือ (hǎa-rēu)
Meaning: to discuss / to consult / to deliberate

In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the verb หารือ (hǎa-rēu), which means ‘to discuss,’ ‘to consult,’ or ‘to deliberate.’ It is used when people talking together to exchange ideas, opinions, or advice, usually with the goal of reaching a decision or solving a problem.

The typical structure usually follows the pattern: verb + หารือ (hǎa-rēu)

For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-^awyàang chên)

เขาได้หารือกับหัวหน้าเกี่ยวกับปัญหานี้แล้ว

k^hǎo dâi hǎa-rēu gàb hǔa-^hnâa gìew-gàb bpān-hǎa née láew
Literal: He has consult supervisor about problem this already.
He has already discussed this issue with his supervisor.

When the helping verb ได้ (dâi) is often placed before the main verb, it functions as a helper verb marking that the action has occurred. It add emphasis that the action did happen or has been completed, similar to “did” or “have done” in English — subject + ได้ (dâi) + main verb.

ทีมงานกำลังหารือกันเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้

t^hēem-ngāan gām-lāng hǎa-rēu gān gìew-gàb rêuang née
Literal: Team-work in the process of consulting each other about matter this.
The team is discussing this matter.

The helping verb กำลัง (gām-lāng) is used before the main verb to indicate an action that is in progress. It functions similarly to the present continuous tense in English — subject + กำลัง (gām-lāng) + main verb. For example: เขากำลังกินข้าว (k^hǎo gām-lāng gīn-k^hâow = He is eating.); ฉันกำลังอ่านหนังสือ (chǎn gām-lāng àan ^hnǎng-sěu = I am reading a book.); พวกเขากำลังทำงาน (p^hûak-k^hǎo gām-lāng t^hām-ngāan = They are working.), etc.

พวกเราต้องหารือกับเจ้านายก่อนตัดสินใจ

p^hûak-rāo dtâwng hǎa-rēu gàb jâo-nāai gàwn dtàd-sǐn-jāi
Literal: We must discuss with boss before decide.
We need to discuss it with our boss before making a decision.

The modal verb ต้อง (dtâwng) means ‘must,’ ‘have to,’ or ‘need to’. It is used to express necessity, obligation, or something that is required to happen. It appears before the main verb and indicates that the action is necessary or required — subject + ต้อง (dtâwng)  + main verb. For example: ฉันต้องไปทำงาน (chǎn dtâwng bpāi t^hām-ngāan = I have to go to work.); เขาต้องเรียนภาษาไทย (k^hǎo dtâwng rīan p^hāa-sǎa Thāi = He has to learn Thai.); พวกเราต้องรีบ (p^hûak-rāo dtâwng rêeb = We have to hurry.), etc.

ผู้บริหารกำลังหารือกันเกี่ยวกับโครงการใหม่

p^hôo-bāw-rí-hǎan gām-lāng hǎa-rēu gān gìew-gàb k^hrōng-gāan ^hmài
Literal: Executives in the process of discussing each other about project new.
The executives are discussing the new project.

The pronoun กัน (gān) means ‘each other’ or ‘one another’. It is used when people do something to each other or together.
