Meaning: to cross the line / to invade personal boundaries / to go too far

In this Thai lesson, we learn how to use the verb ล้ำเส้น (lám-sên), which means ‘to cross the line,’ ‘to invade personal boundaries,’ or ‘to go too far.’ It is used when someone behaves in a way that is not appropriate or respectful, especially toward other people’s feelings, privacy, or rules.

It often involves:

  • Disrespecting personal space
  • Saying or doing something inappropriate
  • Ignoring social or emotional limits

It made up of two words:

  • ล้ำ (lám) = to go beyond / to exceed
  • เส้น (sên) = line

Together, ล้ำเส้น (lám-sên) means ‘to go beyond the line.’ Think of an invisible ‘line’ of respect, privacy, limits, social rules, ล้ำเส้น (lám-sên) is to cross that line.

For examples (ตัวอย่างเช่น — dtūa-awyàang chên)

คุณอย่าล้ำเส้นความเป็นส่วนตัวของฉัน

khūn awyàa lám-sên khwāam-bpēn-sùan-dtūa khǎwng-chǎn
Literal: You do not cross the line privacy belonging to-me.
Don’t invade my privacy.

The noun ความเป็นส่วนตัว (khwāam-bpēn-sùan-dtūa) means ‘privacy,’ ‘personal space,’ ‘personal life,’ ‘personal matter.’ It refers to things that belong to a person and should not be accessed, shared, or disturbed by others.

พฤติกรรมแบบนี้ถือว่าล้ำเส้น

phréud-dtì-gām bàeb née thěu-wâa lám-sên
Literal: Behaviour like this considered to be crossing the line.
This kind of behaviour is considered crossing the line.

The verb ถือว่า (thěu-wâa) means ‘considered to be,’ ‘consider that,’ ‘to count as,’ ‘is regarded as,’ or ‘can be said that.’ It is used to give a judgment, classification, or evaluation of something.

เขาล้ำเส้นจนทำให้ทุกคนไม่สบายใจ

khǎo lám-sên jōn thām-hâi thúk-khōn mâi sà-bāai-jāi
Literal: He cross the line until make-for every-person not comfortable-heart.
He went too far and made everyone uncomfortable.

The verb phrase ไม่สบายใจ (mâi sà-bāai-jāi) means ‘to feel uneasy,’ ‘to feel uncomfortable emotionally,’ ‘to feel worried or disturbed,’ or ‘to feel not a peace.’ It describes a mental or emotional state, not physical illness.

ซาแซงมักจะล้ำเส้นความเป็นส่วนตัวของศิลปิน

sāa-sāeng mák-jà lám-sên khwāam-bpēn-sùan-dtūa khǎwng sǐn-lá-bpīn
Literal: Obsessive fans usually cross the line privacy of artist.
Sasaengs often cross the line of artists’ privacy.

The noun ศิลปิน (sǐn-lá-bpīn) means ‘artist,’ ‘performing artist,’ or ‘creative performer’ (music, acting, visual arts, etc.). It refers to people in the entertainment industry.
